Overworked, underpaid degree holder sparks social media debate

AN anonymous post by a university graduate about being overworked and underpaid has prompted a lively discussion among netizens.

In it, the poster outlined the working hours and the numerous responsibilities heaped on her young shoulders.

The daily routine at the kindergarten included many tasks beyond teaching, which included daycare services and moaning that some of the kids needed to be in a special needs facility. All this for what the poster believes to be a meagre monthly wage of RM800.

What was most galling, though, to the poster was that the employer saw fit to grouse on Facebook that youngsters these days were incapable of facing work challenges.

The post on Meanwhile in Malaysia Facebook forum prompted much feedback. Here is a sample.

Many simply said that if there are other options, just leave.

Some netizens agreed that the wages did not commensurate with the many extra responsibilities.

One netizen shared that she had a similar experience. However, despite the low wages, she found working with children to be extremely fulfilling.

Some remarked that there is a serious problem with the job market when wage levels remain unchanged for years.

Some simply felt it was a case of the employer taking advantage of a fresh graduate.

Another agreed with this sentiment and advised the poster to ignore the employer’s “gaslighting” remarks on social media.

More than a few agreed that the wages were too low and the poster should find something better.

One netizen though gently pointed out the poster’s ability to improve one’s linguistic skills, given that she was in the education line.

More than one comment highlighted that RM800 was insufficient in this day and age, especially with the rising cost of living, which is a huge problem for many ordinary Malaysians.

Some are urging the poster to report the employer to the relevant authorities for not meeting minimum wage requirements.

Amidst all the comments about what is and is not an acceptable wage for such work, one netizen quite possibly hit the nail on the head. – June 30, 2024
