Pahang Bersatu backs Mahiaddin, is the PM losing grip on power?

AS Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin is under pressure to reconvene the Parliament, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) Pahang chapter voiced its support for their embattled supremo.

“Following a meeting of Pahang Bersatu leadership today, we would like to state our support for Mahiaddin, in his capacity as Bersatu’s president and prime minister.

“We also like to reiterate our support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government, led by our president. We are committed to our allies in the coalition, both federal and state levels.

“The decision is made following the current dynamics in national politics and the country’s future, with COVID-19 still raging,” said its Pahang chapter chief, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.

Mahiaddin is under pressure from various quarters to reconvene the Parliament soon to deliberate pressing matters affecting the country, especially the pandemic situation.

Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has been pushing the matter as well to test Mahiaddin’s support, who many claimed have lost confidence of the House following several desertions.

However, the Pagoh MP and his allies had refused to entertain the request, saying it would put MPs in danger of contracting COVID-19 despite all of them being fully vaccinated.

Last week, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers have decreed the Government to reconvene the Parliament as soon as possible, adding the Emergency need not be extended beyond the Aug 1 deadline. – June 20, 2021.
