CONTROVERSIAL blogger and former UMNO Youth executive council member Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, popularly known as Papagomo, was arrested by police today immediately after attending a sedition trial at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex.
According to his legal counsel Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, Azri was detained by officers from Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit outside the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur.
The arrest, reportedly on the orders from higher authorities, stems from allegations under the Sedition Act following a police report.
“After attending the second day of trial in relation to Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 (involving an allegation that the government is pro-Israel and pro-West), two police officers from Bukit Aman’s Classified Crime Investigation Unit arrested Azri (above) outside the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur.
“They are on their way to Dang Wangi district police station. The arrest was on the orders from higher-ups. It is over a police report under the Sedition Act.
“Today’s government is truly abusing power,” the lawyer claimed.
Rafique further expressed concern over the circumstances of the arrest, alleging misuse of governmental power. He noted uncertainty about the specific charges Azri faces, noting the need for clarification during the upcoming remand hearing scheduled before a magistrate tomorrow.
Moreover, Azri is concurrently involved in another sedition case related to contentious issues surrounding the use of the word “Allah” on socks. – July 12, 2024
