Parliament: M’sia lost nearly RM400 mil to cybercriminals last year alone

MALAYSIA lost a whopping RM399 mil to cybercrime last year alone, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Datuk Abd Latiff Ahmad.

“Last year, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has opened 18,392 investigation papers on cybercrime alone.

“As for 2020, the country lost RM413 mil due to cybercrime, with 14,229 investigation papers being opened by the police,” he said, in a written reply to Selayang MP William Leong.

To address the problem, Latiff said the Government are in the midst of establishing the Cybercrime Integrated Management System (CIMS), where various enforcement agencies can share information to nab cyber criminals faster.

“We are also looking at enacting a cyber security law to strengthen our existing legislative framework so as to address any gaps in our existing laws.

“Plus, the Government is also drafting the National Cybercrime Enforcement Crime to address the issue.

However, Latiff acknowledged that it is tough to crackdown on cyber criminals given that it usually involves trans-border cooperation, which includes dealing with legislative framework of other nations.

“Hence, we need to raise awareness among the public on the dangers of cybercrime as well,” he mentioned. – July 19, 2022
