Parliament must reconvene as soon a possible, Agong reiterates

FOLLOWING a meeting with Parliament speakers, Yang di-Pertuan Agong al-Sultan Abdullah Almarhum Sultan Shah reiterated that the august house must reconvene as soon as possible.

In a statement issued by the Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, the monarch said the Parliament must be reconvened to debate the Emergency proclamation and the ordinances (EO) enacted during the period, as stipulated under Article 150 (3) of the Federal Constitution.

“Following the special Conference of Rulers meeting on June 16, the Agong is of the opinion that the Parliament must reconvene soon, with strict adherence to COVID-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) set by the Government.

“Plus, all Parliamentary committees established after the last general election should be allowed to meet as usual.

“It’s important as the committees serve as a check and balance mechanism to ensure the administration is run responsibly and transparently when dealing with issues affecting the people, including public expenditure,” the statement reads.

Earlier today, the Agong granted audience to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun and Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Rais Yatim to discuss the reopening of Parliament.

The meeting, which started at 11am, was also attended by Dewan Negara deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad and both Dewan Rakyat deputy speakers, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman and Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon.

On that note, the Agong expressed his appreciation to the Parliament team for their commitment to reconvene the august house as soon as possible.

“And His Majesty’s decree is in tandem with the resolution taken by the Conference of Rulers, who serve as constitutional monarchs, in line with the provisions of the Federal Constitution and rule of law,” the statement stressed. – June 29, 2021.
