PAS deputy chief urges members to fact-check to avoid lawsuits

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has urged party leaders and members to verify information before sharing it publicly to avoid lawsuits that could harm PAS’ image.

This likely marks a significant shift from the party leadership’s previous “loose cannon” approach, which has fuelled personal attacks against political figures over the past two years.

Tuan Ibrahim acknowledged that while some statements are personal opinions, they are often associated with the party due to leadership positions.

With the rise of AI and digital technology, he warned of the increasing legal risks, both personally and for the party. His remarks follow several defamation cases involving PAS members including MP Siti Mastura Muhammad, who was ordered to pay RM830,000 for defaming DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok Suh Sim.

Additionally, PAS Perak commissioner Razman Zakaria is facing legal action from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan for alleged defamatory remarks linking her to Christian proselytisation.

Despite apologising for part of his claims, Yeoh insists Razman also made other defamatory statements. Tuan Ibrahim stressed the need to protect PAS’ credibility and leadership integrity.

On the other hand, a user on X expressed surprise that Tuan Ibrahim openly urged party members to verify information before sharing it to avoid defamation lawsuits. The user said they previously thought PAS was unbothered by such lawsuits, given how easily the Siti Mastura’s RM825k fine was settled.

They question whether PAS members, known for spreading alleged slander, will actually heed this warning. The reminder likely stems from PAS realising that more legal losses could impact voter support in 16th General Election.

However, the user cynically hopes PAS continues spreading slander, as it could weaken both PAS and Bersatu, benefiting Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional. — Feb 22, 2025
