PAS faces heavy criticism for not resolving water woes in Kelantan, Kedah

THE Kelantan Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) has criticised the state government’s failure to address water supply problems faced by the people during the Aidilfitri celebration.

Kelantan ABIM chief Mohd Syahiran Muhammad expressed disappointment with the insufficient supply of treated water by taking a swipe at the state Public Works, Infrastructure, Transport and Utilities committee for not providing an explanation or immediate solution.

He also criticised the state’s water authority, Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) for allegedly closing the comment section on its official Facebook account.

Meanwhile, Twitter users found the Raya festive spell as the best moment to attack PAS for the Kelantan water woes.

Several threads were opened today on Twitter with hundreds of people commenting negatively on the water woes in the state.

In a thread, AmerHustler (@amer7211) displayed a photo sent by a friend who wanted to take a compulsory Aidilfitri bath (mandi sunat aidilfitri) before the Raya prayers yesterday (April 22).

“Water only comes out at night when water consumption is low. During the day, only wind comes out. Water pressure is very low. This has been happening for the past 30 years. The confusion is whether the water is for bathing or is that ketum water,” tweeted the netizen.

For the uninitiated, the ongoing water supply issue in Kelantan has been a long-standing problem, leading to locals coining the term air karat (literally, rusty water) to lambast the state administration that has not been able to deliver on solutions.

In another thread, Zac (@ZacZakirin13) tweeted: “Just want to share this authentic information about complaints of the people in Kelantan and Kedah regarding the water issue.

“Do you guys know that on Hari Raya yesterday (April 22) and today, many people in Kedah and Kelantan could not take a proper bath? Can’t hold an open house. Can’t celebrate Raya well just because of the on-going water problem?” lambasted the netizen.

“As a Kelantanese who celebrates Raya in Kelantan, I’m very familiar with the issue from childhood to old age. As an alternative, my father had to use bore water and bought three large tanks to meet our household capacity. The total cost runs into thousands.

“However, there are many B40 families in Kelantan who can ill-afford to dredge bore water from underground. They can only depend on the source which is Air Kelantan or polluted well water.”

Sadly, Zac revealed that a similar predicament is also faced by PAS-rule Kedah.

“Just open the SADA (Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd) page on Facebook and read how many people are angry or are cursing because they haven’t had water for several days in their areas. Also open the Air Kelantan page and you will come across tonnes of insults by PAS supporters themselves.” – April 23, 2023
