ISLAMIST party, PAS urged both its bickering allies, Umno and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) to set aside their differences and work towards solidifying the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
“We don’t want to get involved in any polemic which could lead to instability. We are committed to strengthening the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with Umno, while defending the Perikatan Government.
“Therefore, we call our political allies, especially those in the Government, to continue being open hearted, tolerant and learn from past experiences for the sake of the people,” said its secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hasan, in a statement.
Yesterday, the heat went up on the already rocky relationship between Umno and Bersatu, with the former’s youth chief Aysraf Wajdi Dusuki accusing the latter of “bribing” its members to join its ranks.
Earlier today, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak fired another salvo, saying Umno cannot contend being relegated to a supporting role in the current administration, warning it was an attempt to kill of the party.
The Umno Pagoh division also passed a resolution at its annual meeting yesterday, objecting to the Johor Umno leadership’s decision for the party to make way for Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the Pagoh parliamentary seat.
On the recent turn of events, Takiyuddin reminded its bickering allies that the people were getting fed up with petty politics and are clamouring for good leadership.
He added that all parties in the Government needed to be committed, honest and responsible in managing the administration of the country, particularly in this difficult time.
“And PAS believes that only a sincere unity can lead to a country that is harmonious and developed, with people of various races, religions and cultures respect one another,” said the Kota Bharu MP. – Jan 3, 2021.
