Peja’s “tone-deaf” launching ceremony to help flood victims earns public ire

WHILE many residents in are stuck and desperate due to floods, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) audacity to hold an officiating ceremony before disbursing volunteers to help the victims did not escape public ire.

“While they do their pelancaran (launching), ppl who were not affected were out since last night helping the victims in many different ways. #selangorbanjir #MalaysiaBanjir,” said user Faribel.

User Ryuunosuke Akira echoed Faribel’s sentiments saying: “Buat Majlis pelancaran… Pagi baik kerahkan sukerela serta merta dan turun padang terus…buat apa majlis lagi…”

(They held official launching ceremony? Might as well get the volunteers to get down to work immediately)

Netizen Suthesan retorted by saying: “Time mb perak otak dia kat lutut. Sekarang turun sikit je..”

(When he was Perak Menteri Besar, he had his brain in his knees. Now, it went further down a little)

Many parts of the Peninsula Malaysia have been inundated by flood water after it started raining incessantly since Friday night.

While the people got stuck in their homes and on roads due to the heavy downpour, many political parties such as Bersatu and UMNO held their branch and divisional meetings nationwide, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob only addressing the matter later on Saturday.

As the public mobilised themselves to help flood victims due to slow response from the authorities, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu held an official launching ceremony yesterday at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC KL) of his party mobilising volunteers to help those affected by the natural disaster.

Out of touch with reality

On that note, user Suresh said what Ahmad Faizal did was nothing unusual, given that Malaysian politicians love attention and the perks that come with their jobs.

Mmmm…orang politik cuma nak “perhatian”,..pakaian cantik, ada driver, ada gelaran, gaji bulanan, bawa ayam mati ke dewan.”

(Politicians love the attention…wear fancy clothes, have their own chauffeurs, titles and monthly income…not to mention bringing dead chicken into state assembly halls)

User Hazlan concurred with Suresh’s views, adding: “The usual things for them…The Majlis (ceremony) to do things and all their brands on the products while people are suffering.”

Netizen Alexander the Great was unamused by Ahmad Faizal’s antique and said: “Buat pelancaran kos dah berapa ribu?..bagus duit tu bantu mangsa banjir.”

(How much did you spend for the launching ceremony? The money could have been used to help the flood victims).

On related matter, Ahmad Faizal acknowledged public criticism against his launching ceremony after he was also reprimanded by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I agree with Najib. There is no need for a formal launching ceremony or digital backdrop for the event. We will improve and correct what is needs to be done,” the youth and sports minister added. – Dec 20, 2021.
