PENANG police spokesperson W Pusphanathan confirmed that they are investigating an alleged 3R (race, religion, and royalty) offence based on an article published on news portal Free Malaysia Today quoting former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The complaint was related to an article titled “Muhyiddin says Allah issue shows government run by non-Malays,” published on July 30.
Eight reports, including one on the 3R issue were received during the state elections campaign period, as reported by Malaysiakini yesterday (Aug 4).
Meanwhile, Penang police added that the report on 3R was received on July 31.
“Police have opened an investigation paper and the case is being investigated by the Bukit Aman Classified Crime Investigation Unit under Section 505(C) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” Pusphanathan told a press conference in George Town today.
Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid lodged the police report against Muhyiddin, urging authorities to investigate the leader for incitement.
On the other hand, Pusphanathan urged all parties not to exploit the sensitive 3R issue or engage in provocations during the campaign.
He also urged party supporters not to get involved in acts of sabotage or vandalism against election campaign materials such as posters, party flags and banners. – Aug 5, 2023
