Penang teen chess prodigy Poh Yu Tian earns IM title

YOUNG chess sensation Poh Yu Tian, aged 15, has been awarded the prestigious title of International Master (IM) after achieving a rating of 2,429 at the 8th East Asian Youth Chess Championship (EAYCC) held in Penang.

Poh is now the youngest and 10th Malaysian to earn the IM title and the third from Penang.

The Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) extends heartfelt congratulations to all the young stars who have made the nation proud and looks forward to their future accomplishments.

Poh, 15, is the youngest and 10th player in Malaysia to win the title and the third in Penang.

His remarkable performance included securing first place in the under-18 open category, winning the rapid event, and participating in the Blitz event.

This success also made him the first recipient of the PMX Cup trophy, Bernama reported.

Moreover, Kavin Mohan earned the Candidate Master (CM) title. Other notable achievements include Ainul Mardhiah Mohd Afif securing the Women FIDE Master (WFM) title, and Chow Yi Chen and Yap Ray Jin obtaining the CM title.

However, they must surpass the minimum rating requirements before officially using their titles. If Ainul formalises her title soon, she will become Malaysia’s 10th WFM, says the MCF. – July 21, 2024
