“Perhaps a new PM is needed”: DAP MP says due to anti-hopping law delay

LIVID over the delay on tabling the anti-party hopping law, a DAP MP urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to come clean on the matter.

“Rumour has it that the anti-party hopping law would be delayed. With the Dewan Rakyat session due to end next week, can the prime minister explain this to us?

“If the Government is not planning to table it by next week, let us know so that our side can decide whether to get a new prime minister who will commit himself to the promises made,” Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said, in a statement.

In the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Government and Opposition last year, Ismail Sabri promised to enact several laws and policies touching on reforms.

In return, Pakatan Harapan promised to provide the support needed at the Dewan Rakyat to pass the laws and counter any moves to oust Ismail Sabri from power.

The MoU has been credited by several quarters, including Istana Negara, for bringing political stability to the country following the infamous Sheraton Move in 2020 which ousted Pakatan from federal power.

No flip-flops please

Two days ago, Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar told Astro Awani that was still no consensus among lawmakers on what constitutes “anti-hopping” after several rounds of engagements with policy and lawmakers.

He said there are still about 20 questions that need to be addressed.

“That is why we must engage with all party leaders to clarify this term before the next parliamentary sitting,” the minister was reported as saying.

Upset with the recent of turn of events, Lim reminded Ismail Sabri that the MoU signed clearly stipulated that the anti-party hopping law was supposed to be tabled at this Dewan Rakyat sitting.

“I urge the Bera MP not to flip-flop on the matter. The people are watching his every move,” he remarked. – March 17, 2022
