Perhaps sarcasm about “container should by right fall on a minister’s car” serves as right wake-up call

DISGUSTED by the rising number of accidents triggered by reckless heavy vehicle drivers, fuming netizens led by MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL (@MALAYSIAVIRALLL) are demanding prompt action by the Transport Ministry and its agency Road Transport Department (JPJ) to curb such road menaces.

This followed a fatal accident in Bukit Mertajam, Penang yesterday morning (Nov 14) whereby a woman driver was killed and a man injured after a container fell off a trailer and crushed several vehicles in Jalan Bukit Tengah.

Lee Zi Rou, 21, who was driving alone to work died at the scene due to severe injuries during the 9.16am incident.

“The (trailer) driver must have forgotten to lock the container yet took a sharp corner,” MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL hit out on the X platform.

“The innocent victim died at the age of 21. If only the container had fallen on a minister’s car, everyone would have come to their senses.”

Earlier, #UpdateInfo🇲🇾🌍(@update11111) who has carved a niche for viralling scenes of accidents on Malaysian roads had shared a live scene of the container falling from the trailer as well as early moments of the accident captured by dashcams of few vehicles in the vicinity of the accident.

Echoing the sentiment expressed by MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL, a commenter noted that the accident has “unlocked new fear” among motorists who have to wait at the traffic light when a container-laden trailer is passing by (even on the opposite direction).

This is when one commenter wondered what has “a minister to do with the fallen container”.

What followed suit was a barrage of brickbats hurled at poor enforcement by the relevant authorities with one commenter recalling how fast the Public World Department (JKR) “repaired the road soon after KJ (former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin) fell down from his bicycle”.

“It has become a custom in this country. If a disaster happens to ordinary people, we need to wait five to 10 years before a solution arrives. But if it befalls a minister or the mahakaya (ultra-wealthy) gang, one can confirm that the problem will be resolved the next day.”

In fact, poor enforcement amid a spike in road accidents sparked by often speeding and reckless heavy vehicle drivers has angered many Malaysian road users.

To sum up the urgency of the matter, a commenter decided to send a SOS to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook. –  Nov 14, 2024
