PH, BN “careless and negligent” in resolving Kedah’s water crisis, claims Kedah exco

PAKATAN Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) were both accused of being careless and negligent in dealing with the people’s water crisis.

Kedah’s Public Works, Water Supply and Water Resources, Irrigation and Drainage and State Energy committee chairman Mohamad Yusoff @ Munir Zakaria believed PH and BN not only failed to help the people while governing the state, but also put the blame on the current state government and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for failing to resolve the water issue.

“The fact is that the people of Kedah clearly see the commitment of PN government led by Muhammad Sanusi who is trying to resolve this water supply issue,” he said in a statement.

“The people can see in almost all districts in the state, pipe replacement is actively being carried out so that the water supply will not be affected in the future.”

According to Mohamad Yusoff, the current disruption in the supply of treated water is due to the operation to replace ageing pipes and the refurbishment of five water treatment plants within the state.

He stated that the disturbance has become more chronic as water resources have dried up due to the hot water and a lack of rain, affecting around 8,000 Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA) accounts involving 40,000 consumers.

“The festival season has also caused water supply disruptions in Kedah to become worse, so Sada has implemented a Contingency Plan to deal with this issue comprehensively,” he remarked.

“The situation is not as bad as portrayed by some parties. It is still under control and SADA is handling it well, by sending tankers to the affected areas.”

He requested the cooperation of all parties involved, notably the people of Kedah, in using water responsibly and making early preparations by stockpiling adequate water to deal with unanticipated scenarios.

According to him, SADA is also building a pump house and a suction tank to address the issue of low water pressure in elevated areas and at the end of the distribution system. – April 26, 2023
