PKR and Wisma Putra slam US attack on Venezuela, urge respect for sovereignty

PKR, through its International Affairs Bureau chairman Dr Maszlee Malik, strongly condemned the recent US military strikes on Venezuela as an unprovoked act of aggression.

He says it violates Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against a state’s territorial integrity or political independence.

Dr Maszlee described the action as a dangerous escalation undermining global stability, setting a harmful precedent.

“This action is a dangerous escalation that undermines the foundations of the post-war international order, threatens regional and global stability, and sets a dangerous precedent in the use of force in international relations,” he said in a statement on his Facebook page last night.

PKR reaffirmed its opposition to modern colonialism, expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people, and insisted that only Venezuelans have the right to determine their future without external coercion.

The party urged the US to cease all hostile actions and called for respect of Venezuela’s sovereignty.

Separately, Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) reiterated the country’s principled rejection of foreign intervention in any nation’s internal affairs, especially through threats or use of force, in line with the UN Charter and international law.

Wisma Putra emphasised the need for peaceful resolution via dialogue and restraint, while confirming that the Malaysian Embassy in Caracas has verified all registered Malaysian citizens in Venezuela are safe and is monitoring the situation closely, with consular assistance available. —Jan 4, 2025
