A PAKATAN Harapan leader has slammed Perikatan Nasional (PN) Youth for its plan to hold a demonstration this Saturday (Sept 16) which he said will only affect the national festival which should be celebrated in harmony.
Sabah PH secretary Mustapha Sakmud said Malaysia Day this year was very meaningful because the country was about to celebrate 60 years of the formation of Malaysia, and as such, it should not be marred by demonstrations or gatherings that are against the historical values of the nation’s formation.
“The 60th Malaysia Day celebrations should be used to educate the younger generation about the history and essence of Malaysia’s formation and how we plan the country’s future agenda,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
“Calling for the younger generation to demonstrate on as day that coincides with the Malaysia Day celebrations not only disrespects this national festival but sends the wrong message to the younger generation of this country.”
In this regard, Mustapha, who is also the Human Resources Deputy Minister, expressed his hopes that the younger generation who loves the country would think rationally and not get caught up with calls to take part in the demonstration.
According to the Sepanggar MP, the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government is working hard to ensure that the country’s younger generation can enjoy a better life through access to quality education, new job opportunities, progressive wages and a comprehensive protection network.
“Let us celebrate the 60th anniversary of Malaysia Day together with new determination and enthusiasm to ensure that this country will continue to be empowered and become one of the economic giants in this region,” he said.
On Sunday (Sept 10) the media reported that PN Youth would hold a rally in front on Sogo on Saturday as part of its “Selamatkan Malaysia” (Save Malaysia) movement.
The rally is to protest against the court ruling that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi be granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on 47 graft charges involving Yayasan Akalbudi funds. – Sept 13, 2023
