WITH DAP MP Hannah Yeoh receiving mixed reactions over her decision to don a headscarf during a visit to a mosque, UMNO MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said backed the former and urged everyone to stop playing hate politics.
However, the irony of her support did not escape netizens’ eye, who then urged the UMNO leader to advise her own party colleagues first.
(YB, it’s your party that like to play up such issues. Don’t tell me you only realised this just because the polls are nearing. You should advise your colleagues first)
Over the weekend, Yeoh drew flak from a senior DAP leader for donning a headscarf while attending a community event held at a mosque in her constituency.
“Maybe all of our women reps should wear the hijab not only in mosques but all over in public markets, churches, schools and so on.
“Best still, all should convert to Islam. Then we will be ensured to win Putrajaya in the next general election. What say you smart dudes?” Johor DAP state committee member Dr Boo Cheng Hau was reported saying.
However, Yeoh defended her decision, saying donning a headscarf does not change who she was and DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng backed her and urged Boo not to emulate PAS.
However, the DAP veteran shot back by telling the duo that superficial political acts such as wearing a headscarf would not help the party’s chances in winning the polls.
Lead the progressives, Azalina
On that note, user Fadzil urged Azalina to target her advise to her party and their ally, PAS.
Netizen Zulkefli Ibrahim retorted by saying:
However, several netizens praised the Pengerang lawmaker for standing up for Yeoh and urged progressives like her to take lead in carving a better future for Malaysia.
User Bien Kee remarked:
“Terima Kasih (Thank you). It is moderate voice like yours that gives Hope to many in M’sia & abroad.’Politik Perkauman’ (Racial politics) is a block to national unity. Your leadership is needed in a New Malaysia.” – Dec 6, 2021.
