PM: Sabah, Sarawak to gain more parliamentary seats

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Sabah and Sarawak will receive additional parliamentary seats for the first time since 1993, in line with the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63).

Speaking at a Keadilan gathering in Tawau, he also urged unity ahead of the Sabah state election, expected by Nov 11.

“For the first time since 1993, Anwar, who is now the Prime Minister, has announced that the parliamentary seats in Sabah and Sarawak will be increased,” he said when speaking at a Keadilan Gathering Programme on Friday (Sept 26).

Two weeks ago, Sabah requested additional parliamentary seats during the MA63 Implementation Action Council meeting chaired by Anwar.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the request aligns with MA63’s spirit to protect state rights. Anwar agreed in principle but noted constitutional amendments are required.

Sabah also proposed placing tourism under the concurrent list, which will undergo further study.

Yesterday, Anwar reiterated that Sabah has been given its highest-ever development allocation under the unity government, with RM6.7bil in Budget 2025 and immediate RM39mil funding for flood mitigation projects.

Hajiji and several federal ministers were present at the event. — Sept 27, 2025
