PMO: Dewan Rakyat to sit for five days, beginning July 26

AFTER much delay, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced that the Dewan Rakyat will be convene for five days, from July 26 until Aug 2.

Thereafter, the Dewan Negara will be in session for three days, between Aug 3 and 5.

“The session is aimed at providing explanation to MPs on the National Recovery Plan and make the necessary amendments to our legislations to allow future sitting to be conducted using the hybrid method.

“The Emergency proclamation and all ordinances enacted (EO) by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong shall be laid before both houses of Parliament,” PMO said, in a statement.

The Istana Negara, with the blessings of the Conference of Rulers, had issued statements twice on the need for the Parliament to be reconvened soon to discuss COVID-19 management and issues affecting the economy.

However, the Government has been dragging their feet over the matter, with many claiming it was delayed deliberately as Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yassin has lost majority support.

On that note, PMO stated the sessions will be held with strict adherence to COVID-19 standard operating procedure (SOP), as per the guidelines set by the National Security Council and Health Ministry.

“Cabinet members has been informed of the matter,” it added. – July 5, 2021
