AN opposition federal lawmaker has called for the nationwide closure of pig farms.
Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan (PN-Tasek Gelugor) who is also WAWASAN vice president has called for a nationwide closure of pig farms. He suggested that Malaysia ought to follow Singapore to obtain its pork meat supply.
“Personally, I feel it would not be excessive for me to propose that the federal government consider whether it is appropriate for Malaysia to continue having large pig farms when pork supplies can be obtained through imports, as done in Singapore.
“In fact, imported pork may be cheaper than that farmed in Malaysia,” he said in his second call for an end to pig farming industry while debating Budget 2027 today (Oct 19).
This is the second time an opposition federal lawmaker called for an end to pig farming in Malaysia.
Kalam Salan (PN-Sabak Bernam) of Bersatu made a similar call during the Dewan Rakyat session in January.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu announced that the government launched a comprehensive study on the pig farming industry in March.
In a parliamentary written reply, he said that 121 out of 355 registered pig farms have transitioned to modern pig farming system that included a closed house and zero discharge model.
In May this year, Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah called for an end to the pig farming industry in the state.
In July, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin said that the government should not deny legally compliant pig farms from continuing their operations due to pollution caused by a small number of industry players.
Back then, Wan Saiful claimed that pig farming led to chronic river pollution in Sungai Kereh in his constituency.
In a related development, Urimai interim chairman Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy questioned the silence of the DAP lawmakers in defending the interests of the pig farming industry.
“Again there is a call to shut down pig farms in the country by PN politician. They want pigs to be imported. Where are the guardians of pig farms, I mean the ‘pigs’ walking with two legs!”— Oct 19, 2026
