PN-PH now in a straight fight in Sg Bakap by-election

THE Sungai Bakap by-election on July 6 will feature a contest between Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

PN candidate Abidin Ismail of PAS, a 56-year-old logistics executive and former aide to the late Nor Zamri Latiff.

PH is represented by Joohari Ariffin of PKR, a 60-year-old former lecturer and teacher.

The by-election was called following Nor Zamri’s death. Nominations were announced by Election Commission returning officer Khairulnizam Hashim. 

Both candidates were accompanied by prominent leaders from their respective coalitions. There are 39,279 registered voters in Sungai Bakap, with early voting scheduled for July 2. 

Meanwhile, a PAS lawmaker from Perak, who is also the Manjoi assemblyman Mohd Hafez Sabri, has challenged the unity government to contest against PN candidates without using government machinery during the Sungai Bakap state by-election.

“I challenge the unity government to fight us one-on-one, as gentlemen, and not use government machinery,” he said during the launch of PN Youth’s election machinery for the Sungai Bakap state by-elections. – June 22, 2024
