PERIKATAN Nasional’s (PN) candidate Abidin Ismail has taken an early lead in the Sungai Bakap by-elections. He garnered 14,400 votes against 10,000 for Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) candidate Cikgu Joohari Ariffin at the time of writing.
Johari had won the postal vote according to the results released by the Electoral Commission (EC). Cikgu Joohari received 63 votes compared to Abidin who received 56 votes.
The Sungai Bakap state by-election was a head-to-head contest between Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abidin Ismail, following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 due to abdominal inflammation.
The final update given by the EC was that turnout as of 4pm was at 57.7%. The trend indicates that turnout may exceed 65%. During the state election last year, voter turnout was 76.9%.
The voting process for the by-election concluded today peacefully with all nine polling stations closing at 6pm.
The EC reported that 57.7% of the 39,151 registered voters had voted by 4pm.
The by-election was held due to the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff and was contested by Pakatan Harapan’s Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional’s Abidin Ismail.
Ballot boxes were transported to the Official Vote Counting Centre at Dewan Serbaguna Jawi for counting. – July 6, 2024
