THE PN Supreme Council is scheduled to meet next week, with discussions expected to centre on the coalition’s Prime Minister candidate as well as a motion proposing that PAS should take the lead within the alliance.
PN Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said PAS, being the largest party in the coalition, holds the right to suggest a candidate for the country’s 11th Prime Minister.
“Whether it is for the PN Chairmanship or for the Prime Minister post, PAS is entitled to put forward its nominee. The party has already voiced its stance at this assembly, while BERSATU did the same at its General Assembly earlier,” he explained.
He added that the upcoming Supreme Council meeting would serve as the platform for discussions before any final decision is made. Muhyiddin was speaking after officiating the 71st PAS Annual General Assembly at the PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Semut, Kedah, earlier today.
Calls for PAS to lead PN gained traction during the PAS Youth Central Assembly last Friday, where delegates pushed for the party to present its own Prime Ministerial candidate ahead of GE16.
The proposal was later backed by PAS’ Spiritual Leader, Datuk Hashim Jasin, during a media briefing after the PAS Ulama Assembly on Saturday.
Responding to speculation of strained ties between PAS and BERSATU, Muhyiddin dismissed the claims, emphasising that relations remain strong after seven years of collaboration.
“PAS and BERSATU are on very good terms. Some may not be pleased with our closeness, but in my view, the partnership has worked extremely well,” said Muhyiddin.
“We’ve recorded significant successes together, including securing many parliamentary seats in the last General Election. Cooperation in Parliament has also been smooth, with Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin enjoying the full support of PN MPs. The strength of PN’s unity is not only visible at the top but also deeply rooted at the divisional and grassroots levels,” he added. —Sept 15, 2025
