Police station gates to close from 10pm to prevent Ulu Tiram attack from reoccuring, Dewan Rakyat told

AS part of stronger security measures, all police stations nationwide have been instructed to close their gates from 10pm, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the decision was made following the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor on May 17, where two policemen were killed.

“We have to balance the needs of the people and also the safety of our policemen,” he said during Minister’s Question Time.

He said police have also been instructed to reexamine and tighten their standard operating procedures at all stations, including frequency of patrols.

“In terms of the logistics situation at each police station, whether it’s lights, fences, and so on, we issued instructions to provide information immediately and it will go through a process for us to improve,” he said.

During the May 17 attack on the police station, two police officers, Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, were killed after being attacked by a man wielding a machete. Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, 38, was injured by a gunshot.

Initially, police said the attacker was a member of Jemaah Islamiyah, but after further investigations, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain clarified that there were no ties between the attacker, who also died in the incident, and the Southeast Asian extremist group. – July 9, 2024
