MANY gentlemen will be familiar with the massages doled out by Indian barbers after receiving a haircut.
Neck, shoulders and cranium are given a good pull and stretch for the customer to relax and release tension.
However, have you ever wondered whether these barbers who are mostly from India have the requisite training to do these manoeuvres, especially those involving the head and neck?
In a video posted by OH! MEDIA (@ohtweet) on the X platform, a customer in a typical Indian barber shop is seen receiving the traditional end-of-haircut massage.
Selalu je potong rambut kat mamak. Sebab suka kena urut. Tapi lepas tengok video ni, takpe la anney… potong je rambut xyah mengada nak urut bagai 😨 pic.twitter.com/a2uOgDdGAT

When the barber does the twist-and-crack of the head and neck, the customer seemingly complains of discomfort.
A turn in the opposite direction sees the customer passing out and attempts to revive him with sips of water was unsuccessful.
The video ends abruptly with the barber(s) dashing out of the premises, leaving the customer unattended. It cannot be verified if the video was staged nor whether the clip was taken in Malaysia.
But the message is clear – be extra careful when stepping into an Indian barber shop. A haircut is fine but you best be wary of any offer of massages.
Reacting to the slightly more than a minute long clip, one commenter cautioned that this sort of “head crack” massage should be the purview of chiropractors or other suitably qualified professionals.
Another who spoke from experience urged others that he is having problems with his left arm since a barber gave him a head crack without permission. Don’t do it was his stern warning.
Some questioned the authenticity of the video.
One netizen was totally put off going to Indian barbers after watching the video.
Another took issue with the categorisation of all barbers as “mamak” (slang for Indian Muslims) instead of “Indian”.
However, as pointed out by some, a haircut is fine or even a ‘mild’ normal massage. But always refuse the head crack which is dangerous.
One netizen breathed a sigh of relief, claiming it was a blessing that he was bald, thus negating the need to visit the barber.
Whether staged or not, the danger is real. You have been warned. – Nov 14, 2024
