Post about Hari Raya ‘lokam’ highlights Malaysia’s cultural diversity and assimilation

THE exchange of mandarin oranges or lokam is a distinctively Chinese New Year (CNY) tradition. But a post on Bro, Don’t Be Like That La, Bro fan page on Facebook highlights that this is now becoming part and parcel of other Malaysian festivities.

The post simply shows a grocer display of oranges packed specifically for upcoming Aidil Fitri celebrations. And why not?

As the display proclaims, the fruits are “tangy and sweet” and “zesty and juicy”, making them ideal for the breaking of fast during Ramadan.

There were a host of positive comments accompanying the post. Here is a sample:

The image certainly conjured up spirit of kongsi raya (shared celebrations).

Another netizen highlighted ‘green lanterns’ – certainly not referring to the Marvel super hero – but the actual Chinese-styled lanterns which have been appropriated for Raya.

To which one netizen replied that he was waiting for the “green lion dance” to be a feature soon during Hari Raya a.k.a. Eid al-Fitr.

Some netizens are wary that it would a matter of time before some political figures find ways to stir up mischief by making an issue out of the kongsi raya spirit.

Some cheekily suggested that it was a vendor’s strategy for getting rid of excess stock.

Though this was quickly shot down as sheer nonsense.

Though there was a warning to best check on the quality of the fruits inside – better safe than sorry.

The obvious cross-cultural pollination was welcomed by all highlighting that Malaysians do indeed cherish and celebrate diversity. Isn’t this better than constantly harping on what divides us?
