THE pain of labour is not for the faint hearted. Even the nine months leading up to it is a frightening journey, from the huge bodily changes, vomiting and sleepless nights.
As though all these aren’t bad enough, a heavily pregnant woman had an even harder time, not from biology, but from some incompetent staff of Lotus Malaysia.
The shocking story came to light when her husband decided to rant about it on the threads social media platform.
Apparently, she was allegedly asked to prove she was pregnant after the supermarket staff suspected she was concealing stolen items beneath her baby bump.
In a lengthy post addressed to Lotus’s Malaysia, the woman’s husband claimed the incident occurred at the Lotus’s Selayang outlet after the couple had completed paying for their groceries.

According to him, his wife, who is 38 weeks pregnant and due to give birth at any time, was stopped by a staff member outside the cashier area.
The employee allegedly asked his wife, “What item are you hiding in your stomach?
Shocked by the question, the husband said he immediately asked what item his wife was suspected of stealing and who had witnessed the alleged theft.
Instead of producing evidence, he claimed the staff requested to see his wife’s Buku Pink, Malaysia’s maternity health record, to verify that she was pregnant.
He added that the staff even had the audacity to ask his wife to expose her stomach to prove she was not hiding any merchandise.
The couple said they were then made to wait for almost 20 minutes while staff attempted to contact a supervisor, while the other shoppers looked on.
When the supervisor arrived, the husband then explained the situation.
According to the post, the cashier admitted she had not witnessed any theft but had become suspicious because the woman’s stomach didn’t look like a pregnant belly and instead appeared as though she was concealing merchandise.
The post on Threads has since amassed a huge following and netizens by the droves provided their opinions too in the comment section.
Apparently the man and his wife were not the first victim of such unprofessional behaviour, as shared by netizen jay_tiger7.

Netizen Ershadiah further chipped in, saying that she will boycott Lotus from now onwards.

Another netizen hoped the lady staff from Lotus will have a dustbin-shaped belly when she gets pregnant.

mkpro0707, on the other hand, believed there was nothing much to be derived by interacting with Lotus’s communication team.

Returning to the story, the husband claimed no stolen items were found and no witness was produced.
He said the cashier later apologised to his wife, while the male staff member only apologised after he confronted him over the incident.
Describing the experience as humiliating, the husband said the issue went beyond the apology.
“No pregnant woman deserves to go through this,” he said, urging Lotus’s Malaysia to investigate the matter thoroughly and review its procedures for handling suspected shoplifting cases, saying proper evidence should be obtained before customers are confronted.
Lotus Malaysia has since responded to the situation and this was what the entity said:

Lotus Malaysia has pledged to investigate the incident, but many will be watching to see whether the outcome goes beyond an apology.
Staff training, clear procedures and accountability may ultimately determine whether public confidence can be restored. Pregnancy is already physically and emotionally demanding.
The last thing any expectant mother needs is to be treated with suspicion while doing something as ordinary as grocery shopping. Kindness costs nothing, but its absence can leave lasting scars.—July 12, 2026
