MALAYSIANS are passionate about food and will go to great lengths to state their case for a particular eatery.
This was definitely the case of Killer Wantan Mee in Sungai Petani, Kedah which was featured in a clip on the Foodie Facebook page.
In the video, a young lady chef shows how she prepares the halal wan tan mee version which drew some criticism. Firstly, it was noted that she seemed to drowning the egg noodles in sauce.
Secondly, the apparent lack of cooling of the noodles after blanching was a cardinal sin for some (though the video may have been edited to cut off that bit).
However, many netizens disagreed with those commenters, stating there is no one right way to prepare wan tan noodles.
With one offering the food entrepreneur support for her efforts.
One netizen made a pointed remark that if the Chinese and other races can learn to cook Malay dishes and serve it to Malays, surely the reverse can be done.
The fact that the lady in the video was speaking in Mandarin also became a point of contention for some.
But this was quickly countered as a means to create “unique” content – or rather selling point to impress the Chinese food enthusiasts/audience.
At the end of the day, some netizens summed it up best when they emphasised the freedom of choice. More pertinently, this cross-pollination of cuisines is to be encouraged as it fosters greater unity.
