Proper warm-ups before a hike (Part 1)

IF you are new to the sport of hiking, always bear in mind that a proper warm up is recommended before embarking on your journey. It would be good to consult a doctor to ensure the exercises are suited to your age and overall health.

Here is a basic guide on some simple warm-up exercises to help your body get prepped for a hike. In part one, the exercises focus on loosening up the upper body.

The neck

When warming up your neck, ensure not to tilt your head too far back. Move slowly to avoid injury before starting your hike. Relax your shoulders and tuck your chin toward your chest as you exhale, then gently tilt your head back while inhaling.

Repeat this movement 20 times. Next, turn your head to the left and then to the right, repeating 10 times for each side. Finally, make slow circles with your head, 10 times in each direction, being careful not to tilt your head too far.

The shoulders

With your feet slightly apart and arms by your sides, rotate your left shoulder in a circle 10 times in each direction. Repeat with your right shoulder. Finish by rotating both shoulders simultaneously, 10 times in each direction, while inhaling and exhaling deeply.

The back

Stand as if balancing on a tightrope, with one foot placed in front of the other about a foot apart. Stretch your arms straight above your head, interlace your fingers, and turn your palms upward. Lean to the left while exhaling and return to the center while inhaling. Repeat this 10 times, then switch sides and repeat. Finally, reverse your feet position and perform the stretch again on both sides.

Now, imagine living in a locale that will allow you to partake in the above exercises every day. Hiijauan Broga is a mixed-integrated development located adjacent o popular hiking trail – Broga Hill in Semenyih.
