Proton claims 23% of market share in May

NATIONAL carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd claimed 23% of the local automotive market in May, following the restarting of operations under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

“Market insight solutions provider Vodus’s research paper recorded that for May, Proton sold 5,676 vehicles, accounting for an estimated market share of 23.3% of the local automotive market,” said Proton.

The paper had also conducted research on social media during the movement control order (MCO) from April to May, regarding the intention to buy a new car among current Malaysian car owners with a budget of RM200,000 and below within the following three months.

The research found that, despite the industry experiencing a contraction of 51% in sector earnings, 38% of the intended buyers had a national car brand in mind, according to Proton.

“The MCO, implemented on March 18 to control the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in an economic slowdown that affected many areas of the national economy. As automotive companies restarted operations under the CMCO, Proton took its first step down the road to recovery in May,” said the carmaker in a statement.

Proton also shared that amongst its portfolio, the highest demand was for the Proton X70, with 1,909 units sold in June. This, according to Proton, makes it the best-selling SUV overall for the first half of 2020.

Proton has also, over the past two years, seen an increase in the number of 3S/4S outlets in its network that now totals 121. – Aug 5, 2020
