PARTI Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) maybe a ‘wildcard” in the six state polls on Aug 12 but the party certainly deserves ‘hat off” for having already named two candidates for the Selangor state election – the latest being environmentalist Prof Darren Ong Chung Lee for the N44 Dengkil seat.
The 36-year-old Sarawakian who has been a resident of Kota Warisan in Dengkil since 2016 is currently a professor of Mathematics at Xiamen University.
Ong who obtained her PhD in Mathematics from Rice University in the US is currently the Dengkil PSM Branch chairman and editor for the Think Left portal. He has been active in the campaign to save the North Kuala Langat Forest Reserve as well as looking after the interest of the Dengkil residents since 2000.
Yesterday, PSM announced the candidacy of Sivaranjani Manickam, 42, as the party’s choice for N42 Meru seat.

Born in Klang and raised for the most part of her life in Port Klang, the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) graduate brings a wealth of experience as a social activist in addition to a deep commitment to championing the rights of ordinary people, particularly on labour rights and grassroots empowerment.
Within PSM, Sivaranjani has been a central committee member and head of the workers bureau since 2013. Her leadership has paved the way for transformative change, most notably the implementation of the Minimum Wage Act in 2013 and the Employment Insurance System in 2018.
Aside from PSM, MUDA also unveiled four candidates for the Selangor state election, namely its secretary-general Amir Hariri Abdul Hadi (N29 Seri Serdang), Saiyidah Izzati Nur Razak Maideen (N41 Batu Tiga), Thanusha Ramanieswaran (N48 Sentosa) and Melanie Ting (N19 Bukit Antarabangsa). – July 14, 2023
