STARTING next year, National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans for students from poor and hardcore poor families studying at public higher education institutions (IPTAs) will be converted into full scholarships, according to PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Rahim.
She said the initiative, announced under Budget 2026, reflects the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden of low-income students and promoting inclusive access to higher education.
“The measure will allow students to focus fully on their studies without financial worries,” she said in a statement.
When tabling the budget on Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced free PTPTN education for 5,800 students from poor families, with an annual allocation of RM120 mil.
The government also approved a loan repayment exemption for graduates from low- and middle-income families who achieve first-class honours at IPTAs, benefiting around 6,000 borrowers with RM90 mil allocated yearly.
Norliza added that targeted travel restrictions abroad will apply to defaulters working overseas to ensure PTPTN fund sustainability for future students. —Oct 12, 2025
