Purchases doubled on Lazada 12.12 as online shopping becomes the new norm

LAZADA Malaysia is wrapping up 2020 with another record-breaking performance with its recent 12.12 Grand Year-End Sale raking in proceeds which exceeded its previous year’s whole-day sales in just under 12 hours.

“This success is attributed to the increasingly digital local population, where online shopping has become a pervasive cultural phenomenon that’s entrenched in the daily lifestyle of the country’s new normal,” Lazada Malaysia CEO Leo Chow pointed out.

Toys & Games’ and ‘Mobiles & Tablets’ were among the three highest-growing categories with shoppers purchasing nearly 100% more than last year. This is likely due to Malaysians conducting their gift shopping for friends and loved ones online.

Meanwhile, the strong performance of ‘Sports & Outdoors’ also indicates that consumers’ mindset has shifted to becoming more health-conscious as the New Year approaches, and people begin to reflect on their overall well-being.

There was a surge in both number of participating local merchants as well as selling local merchants on Lazada 12.12 this year. This serves as an indicator of a successful digital migration for businesses in Malaysia.

Nearly 80% more local LazMall brands and SME sellers participated in Lazada Malaysia’s 12.12 this year, whereas the number of local merchants, for both brands and sellers, that generated online sales also increased by over 80% year-on-year.

More than 23,000 new local sellers have benefitted from this year’s 12.12 sales, an increase of about 60% compared to last year. Also, new sellers contributed to almost 20% of total sales on 12.12.

“It shows that not only are more brands and sellers coming on board our e-commerce platform, but also that businesses have been better leveraging our e-commerce solutions to achieve sales online such as via our sponsored search and sponsored affiliate tools,” Leo added.

The growing trust among Malaysian consumers towards e-commerce is further evidenced by a 40% year-on-year average increase in the value of top-ups in their Lazada Wallet.

This trust was also reflected on Lazada’s digital-giving platform, LazadaForGood, which garnered over RM30,000 worth of donations for participating non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners within just a week.

The growth momentum of e-commerce in 2021 is expected to continue with Malaysians becoming more confident to adopt digital payment solutions for their online shopping and daily lifestyle. – Dec 17, 2020
