Rafizi attends ASEAN Summit amid resignation rumours, political uncertainty

DESPITE stepping down as PKR deputy president after a significant defeat to Nurul Izzah Anwar, Rafizi still made an appearance at the 16th East ASEAN Growth Area Summit (BIMP-EAGA), where he joined other regional leaders including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Observers noted Rafizi’s cordial exchange with Anwar and other ASEAN delegates, a move that sparked renewed curiosity about his next political steps.

Earlier this month, on 10 May, Rafizi had openly stated that he was prepared to resign from his cabinet role if he failed to defend his party position.

However, he also made clear his intention to continue serving as the Member of Parliament for Pandan, adding that stepping down would allow him to speak more freely on various issues.

Meanwhile, PKR President Anwar Ibrahim has reportedly summoned the newly elected party leadership for a meeting to review the election results and finalise appointments to key party roles.

According to PKR Vice President Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the meeting will also explore potential appointed positions for Rafizi within the party’s leadership.

Roles such as secretary-general and vice president are among those possibly up for discussion. —May 27, 2025
