Rafizi: Digital economy to give opportunities to hardcore poor

ECONOMY Minister Rafizi Ramli defended the government’s plans to innovate the local digital economy to make it easier for the hard-core poor to benefit.

In a tweet today, he said:

“@changlihkang and I are focusing on improving the digital economy ecosystem. So that we have more competitive startups and tech companies.

“There are many things we can do better so that more digital talents are developed. In addition to the usual issues that are discussed (such as funding, opportunities, etc.), the issue of innovation in our products & services is also a key issue.

“This is one of the first steps in mainstreaming and familiarizing people with innovation,” he said.

However, some netizens criticised Rafizi on the government’s mission to elevate the economy of the poor through the digital economy.

User @pakdoe said:

“This is just for personal business. Try to think about the people a little. Make something beneficial for the people mostly. Are you really that clever?”

Rafizi replied to the comment, saying:

“When the government has a digital economy level strategy, they (non-government supporters) argue that it is not for most people. When the government makes IPR and give economic opportunities to the extreme poor & B40, their gangs don’t want to welcome it.

“Digital economy -> tech job opportunities -> higher wages for the people. For the gangs (opposition), it seems that to govern means not to bring new ideas, suspend Parliament & just release a pdf statement,” he said.

Rafizi received a lot of support in his statement from followers on Twitter, while some complained about the overnight policy report, OPR increase or slow internet as difficulties in doing digital business.
