Rahman Dahlan quits as UMS chair, cites loyalty to Umno

UPPING the ante against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan has now relinquished his post as Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) chairperson.

In a letter to former Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, the Umno supreme council member said the decision was made in adherence to his party’s resolution on Aug 3.

“With that, I tender my resignation as UMS chairperson with immediate effect. I would like to express my gratitude to the ex-minister for giving me a chance to serve at the university,” he said in a letter which was published on Facebook.

Noraini herself resigned yesterday, citing loyalty to her party’s decision. Her move came after Lenggong MP Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Umno vice president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin quit their government and government-lined posts, respectively.

Balik Pulau Umno division chief Datuk Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah also announced that he was quitting from his position as a board member of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

Touching on the matter, Abdul Rahman said that Umno had always championed the role of constitutional monarchy, as per Article 3 of the party’s constitution.

“With that, I would like to thank UMS staff for supporting me during my tenure there. May God protect us all in the name of religion, race and country,” the former minister concluded. – Aug 7, 2021
