Ramadan bazaar delights or health hazards? A look behind the stalls

PEOPLE cannot help but feel their appetite rising as they meander across the long line of stalls at the bazaar during Ramadan.

But is it all good food, mouth-watering aroma and the promise of one’s hunger being satiated at the bazaar?

More likely it is food poisoning and a costly visit to the doctor for some stomach ache medication.

Behind every bazaar is a story of bad hygiene and perhaps this is best portrayed by a recent post on X by netizen @Cool_Wannabe82.

In a video recording, a person could be seen inspecting the food stuff at a bazaar stall which were merely covered up by a plastic canvas.

Ideally these should have been refrigerated but apparently it would require too much effort from the stall owner?

Observing the video, several netizens said this was why they did not visit the Ramadan bazaars.

“It’s been ten years since I left the Ramadhan bazaar,” claimed netizen @49d09c758dd6469 while @abhns20 said that in the 30 days of fasting, he did not enter the bazaar for 30 days.

“This is the reason. If the food is not finished everyday, they will not throw it away everyday. Confirm it will be recycled,” @abhns20 said.

Another netizen added that this was the mentality of the B40 who are busy doing business but lack the knowledge to care for the food.

“I wonder if they do this at their own home, wrapping the food in newspaper or toilet paper,” he said.

Then there was @chokemedaddiy who said home cooking and home made is the best.

“Later they will complain that their business is not doing well. But they do business while committing treachery to people,” said @dzers_.

Supporting his statement was netizen @ZikryRusli, reminding all these traders that their lack of honesty will be questioned in the afterlife.

The online community is no short of sarcasm, so let’s hear it from @IszuddinIdris, saying, “Do not disturb the Malays from finding their sustenance.”

On our part, we think it is vital for the Malays to make profit as long as they don’t send their fellow Malay customers to the hospital.

Also, the winning comment goes to @wongshu04twitte who said, “Delicious.”

Perhaps the meal becomes more delicious since it has been fermenting in the open air. Bacterial action and a little bit of rotting should add flavour to the food.

Thank you for the review, netizen @wongshu04twitte, but we will pass. —Mar 28, 2025
