Razali questions Steven Sim’s ILO speech on social contract

BERSATU information chief Datuk Razali Idris questioned the statement of Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong who, in his speech at the International Labour Conference (ILO) stated that it is important to renew the comprehensive and high-quality social contract.

Razali said that the demand for an explanation was not out of spite but instead, the responsibility to inquire about the minister’s statement.

He added that Sim needs to be careful when discussing or speaking about matters related to social contracts even when speaking on the world stage because it can invite polemics.

“The social contract has a clear agenda for shaping the togetherness of all Malaysians by taking into account the interests of all. The question now is whether DAP leaders are still stubborn to understand or disobey some affirmative provisions under the Federal Constitution.

“As a result of failing to understand the social contract and always looking for a way to win for them?” he asked through a message on the social site Facebook on Saturday (June 15).

Bernama and Astro Awani seem to have removed the text versions of their report on Sim’s speech at the ILO where he mentions the need to review the social contracts.

Videos of the reports from AstroAwani are still found online, on YouTube and on their website.

A TikTok user however uploaded a video in which he defended Sim, saying the issue is taken out of context since the minister is talking about social contract and not about Malay rights in the country, as some political figures are trying to portray it.

Through a message on the X social site on Friday (June 14), Sim also alluded to the world’s social contract now only benefiting the world’s major powers and harming other small countries.

Moreover, Sim raised critical concerns about the current global social contract which predominantly benefits powerful nations while disadvantaging smaller countries.
In a statement posted on X, Sim highlighted the inequities of a global social contract favouring major world powers, adding that he had addressed this issue in his speech at the 112th International Labour Conference held in Geneva on Wednesday (June 12).
He also spoke of the Madani concept at the ILO conference.

“I have also advocated for the Malaysia Madani concept, drawing inspiration from the Medina Charter, which prioritises justice, shared prosperity and unity.” – June 16, 2024
