“Re-invite PN to join unity govt to reduce identity politics,” PBM’s Sng suggests

THE Madani government should extend an olive branch to Perikatan Nasional (PN) and re-extend an invitation for the coalition to join the unity government, said Datuk Larry Sng.

According to the Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president said this is even more crucial now following the outcome of the six state polls last Saturday (Aug 12).

“I believe the Madani government should re-invite PN into the unity government,” Sng said in a Facebook post today (Aug 14), adding that the move should reduce identity politics in Malaysia.

Recall that last November following the events of the 15th general election (GE15) that had resulted in a hung parliament, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had asked PN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to work together in forming the government.

PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had, however, snubbed the idea, saying the coalition had discussed this matter beforehand before coming to the conclusion that they will not work with PH.

The idea was mooted once again by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on June 17, with Fadillah urging PN to join the unity government to together develop Malaysia as one united nation.

Fadillah told reporters this when asked to comment on Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s criticism of the Unity Government by saying the people were disappointed with its performance at the federal level.

Fadillah urged Sanusi, who is also Kedah Menteri Besar, and the rest of PN members, to join the unity government in developing the country rather than just criticising.

However, the idea was rejected by PAS and Bersatu, with deputy PAS president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man saying they will continue their role as a “constructive opposition”.

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS cannot join the unity government as it would be akin to breaking the promise made by its candidates and leaders to the people during GE15.

He told Berita Harian that even though Fadillah had meant well, PN joining the unity government would be “akin to lying to the people”, adding that while the offer is there, the coalition is standing by their decision for now. – Aug 14, 2023
