THE Malaysian Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (REHDA) Institute has emphasised the urgent need for urban renewal to address the deterioration of ageing strata properties, which poses risks to public health and community safety.
REHDA highlighted the issues during the International Strata Symposium on April 8 to April 9, 2025, in conjunction with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship.
“Delaying intervention in areas experiencing urban decay risks worsening problems such as crime, economic stagnation, inequality and further devaluation of properties.”
“These legal safeguards will support transparent, community-driven urban renewal and reinforce property rights,” Bernama quoted it as saying.
The institute warned that neglecting urban renewal could lead to declining property values, increased crime, economic stagnation, and social inequality, particularly in areas like Kuala Lumpur with poorly maintained flats.
It advocated for policy-led reforms to prevent social fragmentation and costly repairs, noting government commitments to protect property rights. — May 10, 2025
