Report: Azmin, Rina Harun join state poll race in Selangor

DATUK Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Datuk Seri Rina Harun are back to contest in the Selangor state election on Aug 12.

This was announced by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during an event in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya last night (July 26).

Former Selangor menteri besar Azmin, who was also the former Gombak MP and a senior federal minister, will be contesting in Hulu Kelang.

Meanwhile, Rina, a former women, family and community development minister, will be running in Batu Tiga.

It was previously speculated that Azmin would be leaving his traditional Bukit Antarabangsa seat for the neighbouring Hulu Kelang.

However, he told reporters last night after the event that he is not running away from Bukit Antarabangsa and said the decision was made because Hulu Kelang falls under the Gombak parliamentary seat, where he was MP for three terms.

“I would like to stress that Hulu Kelang was my main seat since 1999 and while I was Gombak MP for three terms since 2008 (until 2022), Hulu Kelang was part of the parliamentary constituency so the question of my running away does not arise,” he stressed.

Bukit Antarabangsa will now be contested by Bersatu’s legal and constitutional bureau deputy chief, Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif.

Bersatu vice-president Datuk Seri Abdul Rashid Asari will defend the Selat Kelang state seat, while Nurul Syazwani will contest in Permatang.

Nurul Syazwani is the daughter of former Umno strongman Tan Sri Noh Omar.

Overall, Bersatu will contest the lion’s share of seats with 31, followed by PAS (17) and Gerakan (eight) in Selangor.

PN held five seats before the state assembly’s dissolution on June 23, with Bersatu holding four seats, and PAS one.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) had 40 seats (PKR 19, DAP 15 and Amanah six), Barisan Nasional (BN) five, and Parti Bangsa Malaysia two.

Pejuang and Warisan had one each, along with one independent representative.

The Batang Kali seat was declared vacant after Pejuang’s Harumaini Omar failed to attend the state assembly for more than six months.
