BERSATU will take legal action against six of its MPs who have allegedly betrayed the party by declaring their support for the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led unity government.
According to Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, the party has appointed legal representation. However, he did not elaborate on when the suit is expected to be submitted to court.
“Yes, we have appointed our lawyers for the purpose,” the Opposition leader said after chairing a meeting with heads of portfolios in Perikatan Nasional (PN) on Thursday (Feb 8).
Hamzah, in a statement, had said that the matter was reached during a special meeting of the Bersatu Supreme Council held on Jan 29.
He added that the legal action was so the elected representatives would vacate their seats and that Bersatu was ready to face any by-elections in the future.
So far, six Bersatu MPs have declared their support for the unity government: MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tanjong Karang).
Syed Abu Hussin previously alleged that around 10 more Bersatu MPs are expected to lend their support to Anwar, adding that the MPs are expected to declare their intention ahead of the parliamentary session scheduled for Feb 26.
Syed Abu Hussin claimed that the five are from the northern region, including Kedah, Penang, and Perak; three from the East Coast, namely Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang; and two from the central region, namely Selangor and Melaka.
He asserted that these MPs made the decision due to their profound disappointment with the party, feeling unappreciated and neglected. – Feb 8, 2024
