Report: Comedy club in TTDI shuttered over insult on Islam sketch, deputy minister says

THE Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has closed down a comedy club operating in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur after a comedian was alleged to have insulted Islam during a sketch.

“We will not compromise on anyone who inflame racial and religious sentiments. I hope such incident doesn’t happen again in the Federal Territories or any parts of the country,” Astro Awani reported Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias as saying.

Yesterday, a 54-second video went viral on social media, featuring a woman wearing a headscarf and a baju kurung, claiming to have memorised part of the al-Quran during a comedy skit.

Soon after, she took off her hijab and clothes on stage, revealing the comedian as wearing a mini dress underneath. Her act received cheers and laughter from the club’s patrons.

The incident drew the attention of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI), which had since launched a probe on the matter.

“Under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997 (Act 559), which is insulting or causing contempt against Islam, is an offence, and can be fined not more than RM3,000 or imprisoned for a term not exceeding two years or both if convicted,” Bernama reported its director Datuk Mohd Ajib Ismail as saying.

The police had also launched an investigation over the matter and the case is being investigated by its elite department, Unit Siasatan Jenayah Terkelas (USJT). – July 10, 2022
