Report: I reduced Vincent Tan’s son’s charges, never took bribes

FORMER Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas dismissed the allegation that he had indulged in corruption when handling tycoon Vincent Tan’s drug case while holding office.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Thomas stated that it was normal in criminal cases when lawyers of the accused submit written representation to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to reconsider the decision to prosecute a case.

“Having studied the representations and the investigation papers, reviewing the relevant provisions and discussion with the case officers, I recall reducing the charges.

“Receiving representations from lawyers and accused, and reducing or dropping charges thereafter are common occurrences at the AGC.

“I have no access to any documents, record or file maintained by those who prepared the investigation papers,” he was reported as saying, via a press release.

Recently, crime buster Twitter account, Edisi Khas, alleged that Tan’s son was detained under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for being involved with a large quantity of drugs.

However, the social media account holder claimed that Thomas had classified the case as no further action (NFA).

On that note, Thomas stressed that throughout his professional career and personal life, he had never procured a bribe; including when he was serving as AG.

“Integrity, honesty and truth are precious values to me. They are sacrosanct and I have never compromised them. The allegation that I was bribed when I took this decision is therefore vigorously denied,” he noted.

Thomas added that he never knew Tan prior to his appointment and had never acted for him or his companies, until today.

“The timing and vileness of this attack on my integrity are linked to the Roger Ng (1MDB) trial that just commenced in New York, involving fraudulent use of monies belonging to Malaysia.

“Our politicians and personalities will be featured when evidence unfolds during this trial, which has received worldwide media coverage. Against this background, I am an easy target and a convenient digression,” he remarked. – Feb 19, 2022
