A PERAK PAS leader has alleged that opposition assemblymen were barred from passing cakes to teachers to honour the recent Teachers’ Day celebration.
According to Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria, he had received complaints from opposition representatives that they were stopped from visiting teachers in their respective constituencies on that day, allegedly due to directive to “respect the government of the day”, Malaysiakini reported.
“This is a shameful act in the name of Madani. Teachers are educators of voters’ children in every constituency. Therefore, it is an obligation of an elected representative to respect and honour teachers,” he was quoted as saying.
Claiming that no assemblymen or MPs were previously barred from sending cakes to teachers on Teachers’ Day, Razman urged the Education Ministry to clarify whether the directive was real and if it was endorsed by its minister Fadhlina Sidek.
He also called for the state education director who had allegedly issued the directive, to claim responsibility and issue a public apology to teachers.
Interestingly, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal had made a similar allegation on Thursday (May 16).
Taking to Facebook, he apologised to all teachers in his constituency for not being able to join in the Teachers’ Day celebration.
“The (alleged) directive from Education director-general (Azman Adnan) clearly considers us (opposition MPs) as criminals, persona non grata since only criminals do not have the right to enter schools,” he wrote.
“However, I believe such a directive is the result of the Education Minister’s attitude and stance. The government officer was just doing his job.”
Wan Fayhsal stressed that opposition MPs are no less qualified and can assist schools in their constituencies if they were given the space and opportunity to do so.
“But this is Malaysia Madani for you. They do exactly what they had previously opposed and are now worse than their political foes. No wonder our education standard is plummeting!”
