SINGAPORE’S government has issued a notice calling for a correction to a Facebook post describing a recent call between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysia Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin over easing travel restrictions, saying the description is false, reports Bloomberg.
A post by a Facebook page called “State News Singapore” wrote that Singapore’s Lee had requested for Muhyiddin to open up daily commutes between the countries and that Malaysia refused.
The Singapore government said the claim was “false”, and clarified that Malaysia had requested the call and was the one to propose for a daily cross-border commuting arrangement.
The correction direction is the first known use of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act or POFMA, Singapore’s fake news law, since the 2020 election was called. The election will be held on July 10. – June 29, 2020
