Report: Still no show-cause letter from party for Bersatu “rebels”

THE six Bersatu MPs who previously declared their support for the unity government have yet to receive any show-cause letters following the constitutional amendment made by the party earlier this month.

According to Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Syed Abdul Fasal who spoke on behalf of the group, nothing has changed in terms of status for the six lawmakers.

“As of today, we have yet to receive any show-cause letter, and it remains status quo. There have been no changes (to our status),” he was reported a saying by New Straits Times.

The other MPs who have declared their support for the unity government are Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).

The amendment to Bersatu’s constitution adopted on March 2 will invalidate the party membership of an MP or assemblyman who does not abide by the party’s position. The amendment must receive the Registrar of Societies’ (ROS) approval before it goes into force.

Syed Abu Hussin stated that the six lawmakers agreed to not back down from their support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government.

“We will continue to provide our undivided support for the prime minister. Our support for the Prime Minister is only to strengthen the federal administration and allowing him to further develop the country,” he remarked.

“We are confident with the decision that we have made over the matter and that we will not back down from it.”

Previously Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris challenged some of its rogue MPs to vacate their seats immediately without having to wait for a court decision.

The challenge was posed to Syed Abu Hussin and Azizi who had had initially stated they were prepared to vacate their seats if Bersatu amended the party constitution to take action against those who defied party orders.

However, after Bersatu’s decision to amend its constitution earlier this month, Syed Hussin, Suhaili and Zulkafperi Hanapi had stated they would not vacate the seats as long as the matter has not been decided in court.

Berita Harian reported Syed Abu Hussin as pointing out that there is no guarantee that the ROS would approve Bersatu’s bid to change the party’s rules.

He further urged other Bersatu MPs to not be afraid with the amendments agreed to by Bersatu’s delegates at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on March 2, and that he had called on them to proceed to support the prime minister if they have such intentions.

“Because all these rules can be challenged in court and it is not certain yet that this amendment will be approved by the ROS or court,” he was quoted telling the Malay news portal. – March 28, 2024
