FINANCE Minister and UMNO member Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz is the new treasurer of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Selangor chapter.
The appointment was announced last night by Selangor BN chief Tan Sri Noh Amar when closing the state chapter’s convention.
Clad in a blue BN shirt, Tengku Zafrul received his appointment letter from UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on stage, Malaysiakini reported.
Tengku Zafrul replaces Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos, who is now the state BN communications chief.
Tengku Zafrul, who was believed to be a non-politician until his UMNO membership was confirmed in May, did not say if he will stand as a candidate in the upcoming elections.
“That is up to the BN leadership,” the senator told reporters last night.
“Candidate or not, what is important is that we are united, InsyaAllah, in ensuring victory for BN”.
Tengku Zafrul is rumoured to be eyeing the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat, which intensified after his ministry announced in June that it had “adopted” the district and approved the Puncak Alam East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) station.
He was also said to be after the Lembah Pantai seat.
In March 2020, Tengku Zafrul was appointed as finance minister during Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s stint in power.
