HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd (HSBC Malaysia) should take stock of UK National Contact Point (UK NCP) plans to mediate and resolve its issues with the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE).
“I hope HSBC Malaysia will find a harmonious resolution to the dispute by taking constructive effort, which is by returning to the negotiation table.
“Talk to NUBE and find a permanent solution to the matter,” UNI-Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC) president Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal said, in a statement.
Yesterday, NUBE said that the UK NCP had decided to accept some of its complaints against HSBC.
NUBE, with the backing of UNI Global Union, said the UK NCP would pursue the matter for further examination or mediation.
“UNI Global Union and I will cooperate with UK NCP and we are optimistic that a constructive decision will be made in the best interest of NUBE members and all bank employees in Malaysia,” its secretary general J Solomon was reported saying.
Earlier today, HSBC Malaysia said it would wait until local legal and judicial process are concluded before looking into separate mediation process.
“Some of the issues raised by NUBE to the UK NCP is currently being reviewed by Malaysian courts and the Human Resources Ministry (MOHE) and we will continue to respect applicable legal and legislative process.
“As such, we feel it is appropriate – and in the best interests of all parties – to conclude existing Malaysia-based mediation and judicial review before embarking on further and separate mediation,” the bank told FocusM.
On that note, Shafie opined that both parties should talk again and iron out a “win-win solution”, so as to maintain cordial ties among employers and employees, instead of relying on the court process.
“A lot of issues be resolved on the negotiation table. So, I hope HSBC Malaysia will use an open approach to resolve issues affecting its workers, the bank and our country.
“As a respected multinational company which has benefitted greatly from our Government’s business friendly policies, we hope HSBC Malaysia would recognise the contributions made by its employees, who are largely Malaysians,” the veteran unionist remarked. – Sept 21, 2021
