Retailers’ buying momentum on the rise as foreign funds exit

FOREIGN investors continued to be net seller last week (Dec 7-11) on Bursa Malaysia with market disposal amounting to -RM574.5 mil.

On Monday (Dec 7) alone, foreign investors sold -RM157.6 mil net of local equities with retailers and local institutions emerging as net buyers and net sellers to the tune of RM208.5 mil and -RM50.9 mil respectively.

Interestingly, retailers were active buyers every day of last week, according to MIDF Research.

The largest net inflow was on Wednesday (Dec 9) while the smallest was on Thursday (Dec 10) with net inflow to the tune of RM41.5 mil. The biggest inflow stood at RM267.9 mil.

“As a whole, December has seen retailers as ardent net buyers,” observed the research house in its weekly fund flow report. “So far, there was only one day in the month where retailers were net sellers at Bursa.”

Nevertheless, it was almost opposite for local institutions. The market saw local institutions as net sellers every day except on Thursday.

The largest net selling was recorded on Wednesday (Dec 9) at -RM88.86 mil with the only buying being on Thursday (Dec 10) at RM119.20 mil.

To recap, retailers and local institutions have been net buyers for Bursa. Retailers are net buyers to the tune of RM13.14 bil while net buying by local institutions stands at RM11.16 bil.

On the contrary, foreign investors’ net selling to-date has reached -RM24.8 bil worth of equities on Bursa.

In comparison to another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Malaysia recorded the most foreign net outflow at US$141.51 while Thailand was the only market which experienced an inflow (US$137.12 mil).

Two other markets, namely Indonesia and the Philippines saw outflows amounting to US$118.68 mil and US$10.65 mil respectively.

In terms of participation, retail investors recorded a weekly increase of 11.26% in average daily trade value (ADTV) while foreign investors experienced an ADTV increase of 7.21% and local institution (-36.12%).

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd at RM14.04 mil, followed by Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (RM2.74 mil) and DiGi.com Bhd (RM2.59 mil). – Dec 14, 2020
